Decarbon3BIO

Full name:

Bio-decarbonization Systems for Sustainable Biomass, Biofuels and Bioproducts

Appointment of the team:

2025

As the impacts of climate change become increasingly evident, scientific interest in developing innovative methods for capturing CO₂ before its release into the atmosphere continues to grow.

Microalgae – single-celled photosynthetic organisms — have emerged as highly efficient biological systems for carbon capture and sequestration. Consequently, they represent a central focus of the Decarbon3BIO research group, which aims to design and develop integrated technologies for the capture and utilisation of atmospheric CO₂.

In addition, the project investigates the biochemical and functional properties of microalgae with potential applications in the production of biofuels, biofertilisers, and cosmetic ingredients. By integrating these processes, the research team seeks to establish zero-waste biotechnological systems that enhance resource efficiency, ensure economic feasibility, and support global climate change mitigation through CO₂ capture and utilisation.
