The OPTIMA research group is focused on creating new technologies based on optical technologies. Their project is split into three sections: human body, human mind, human creations.

Each section uses various photonic technologies, for example for detecting early sight diseases (human body), monitoring health after a concussion (human mind), or for conservation of paintings (human creations). As the sections are intertwined, the research team wants to exchange the ideas behind the technologies to develop them even further.

The OPTIMA initiative aims to advance photonic technologies, making them non-invasive, reliable and accessible. By doing so, they can become useful in various fields, such as medical imaging.

Maciej Szkulmowski

Bio:

Maciej Szkulmowski is an Associate Professor at NCU’s Department of Biophotonics and Optical Engineering, Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Informatics. His research focuses on ultrafast modulation of aberrations in a light beam to improve the performance of imaging systems, interferometric imaging of the entire eyeball using active optical elements and the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) methods for imaging cells and tissues. Professor Szkulmowski is the author and co-author of over 190 publications (as of June 2026). His work has been published in the world’s leading scientific journals such as Optics Letters, Optics Express, Optics Communications, as well as the British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Cornea.
